I didn't know this book was a series when I read it. The good news is that it's a great book and I'm glad there will be more. The bad news is I read it when it first came out, so now I'm stuck waiting at least six months to a year for the next one. The story was engaging and the characters impossible not to love. My only complaint was the author's decision to make the ghost scary and mean, which in turn made Xanthe frightened and desperate. I'd have loved to have seen her to stand up to the ghost, or at least outsmart her. It's hard to have fun sharing the adventure with someone who's constantly worried about her mother. I've enjoyed many of Paula Brackston's books and this one didn't disappoint. Everything from the setting (England) to the magic of antiques and the promise of old stories they can tell, throw in a bit of romance, and it is a book that I can't put down. I enjoyed the descriptions of the manor, of the people in both time periods, and most of all Xanthe's unique personality. Knowing that this is the beginning of a new series is wonderful, but at the same time annoying because I have to wait for the next book to come out. Only 4 stars because I wish the ending would have been a bit different, and I won't go into detail here because I don't want to spoil it for other readers, but even a sneak peak into the next book would have gone a long way.
